Tech Talk
Technicians have a heavy responsibility when servicing Cars and Light Trucks. Not only are we responsible for the safety of everyone riding in the vehicle. We also have the responsibility of everyone on the planet. Here?s why. Most Cars and Light Trucks run at stoichiometric ratio 14.7 to 1. The correct calculation is 14.7 lbs. of air to 1 lb. of fuel. This means a vehicle operating at 14.7 to 1 air fuel ration burns 9000 gallons of air to 1 gallon of fuel. In 2017 the United States sold 143 billion gallons of Gasoline. Multiply that by 9000 and you get how many gallons of air is used in the USA alone. This does not include other countries around the world. My calculator doesn?t go the far.
Where is our responsibility? Every car or Light Truck that comes into our shops with a check engine (MIL) light has an emissions related item causing the check engine light to illuminate. This may cause the engine to run rich or lean. This causes excessive pollution on top of what we use at a stoichiometric ratio. We only have so much air and we can be part of the solution. You don?t have to be an environmentalist to figure out that someday we will run out of air to breathe. We have a responsibility not only to our client but to our Planet. We have the responsibility to get it right.
Think about this every time you work on a vehicle.
